Being in the central area of Kagoshima Prefecture which lies in he southern end of Kyushu in Japan, Kagoshima is located at east longitude 13026’-13043’ and north latitude 3124’-3141’, facing Kagoshima bay in the east. Half of eastern Sakurajima on the other side of the bay also comes within Kagoshima’s jurisdiction. The length from east to west of the city is about 27 kilometers, with from north to south is about 30 kilometers. Kagoshima takes up an area of 289 square kilometers with a population of 550,000 people.

In Kagoshima, the highest temperature in summer is 35℃, the lowest in winter is -1.6℃and the annual temperature is 18.3℃.With a warm, moist climate that seldom snows in winter, Kagoshima is a seaside city endowed with enchanting scene.

Today, Kagoshima is the capital city as well as the political, economic, social and cultural center of the Kagoshima prefecture. Its core city position has made it the most powerful one among the central cities in south Kyushu.

The most flourishing industries in Kagoshima are beverages, forages, cigarettes. Food processing, publishing and printing are also well developed.

Kagoshima Airport is 30kilometers away from the urban area, flights from here can reach Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo, Fukuoka, Hongkong, and Hawaii weekly.

On Octber 30, 1982, Xiong Qingquan, Mayor of Changsha, and Yamanoguchi Yasuhide, Mayor of Kagoshima, signed the “Agreement on the Establishment of Friendship City Relationship Between Changsha and Kagoshima” in Kagoshima.
